When we are young, we are taught that we should not be selfish, that we should put the needs of others before our own. This can (and often has) lead to a situation where someone sacrifices his or her dreams and ambitions to help someone else achieve theirs out of fear of being labelled “selfish.”
In my book, Happiness Minutes: Practical Steps to Finding Happiness, I coined the term “Good Selfishness” to make the point that each of us are important, that we should selfishly look after our own needs in order to live happily. We can contrast this against “Bad Selfishness” where we put our own needs ahead of someone else for no reason other than personal gain.
As with every area of life, balance is important. We should do things for others, and you practiced this last week… You did, didn’t you?
It is perhaps more important to see to your own needs. After all, if you don’t, who will?
If you feel submerged because your needs are not being met, because you can’t express yourself, it’s time to swim towards the surface and claim your freedom.
You are important too! But remember to balance the giving and the taking.~ There is a chapter on Good Selfishness in my book,
Happiness Minutes: Practical Steps to Finding Happiness.
